What to Expect

Overview

LASIK surgery is virtually painless. It is performed as an outpatient procedure and it usually takes less than 10 minutes per eye. If necessary, we administer a relaxing agent and a topical anesthetic in the form of eyedrops to add comfort during the procedure.

Procedure

A lid holder is placed on the eye to keep it from blinking and then you look at a blinking red light to help minimize movement.

The surgeon creates a small, painless incision in the cornea with a laser or a blade called a microkeratome. Both options are available depending on your preference. The flap is lifted to the side and the laser is used to remove a layer of corneal tissue. This permanently reshapes the cornea and removes all impedance on vision. An infrared laser is used to track your eye and allow for small, natural movements. If the eye moves too much the laser will automatically shut off so the surgeon can help you re-position. Once the procedure is over the flap is then folded back to its normal position and sealed without sutures.

The procedure is painless and recovery does not usually involve any significant pain. Some patients experience mild discomfort in the form of redness or itching. If necessary, we administer eye drops and the discomfort usually subsides within 24 hours. Complete vision is restored and you can return to normal activities the next day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a candidate for LASIK ?

Every person is unique, so the best way to answer that is to come in for a consultation. In general you may be a candidate if you have mild to high myopia (nearsightedness),  mild to moderate hyperopia (farsightedness), and/or astigmatism. You must be at least 18 years old, have a stable eye prescription, and your eyes must be free of disease.

Is LASIK Surgery safe?

The success rate for LASIK is very high, with over 99% of cases resulting in no serious complications. In a 2009 study, over 95% of LASIK patients surveyed reported satisfaction with their outcome. As with any surgery there are risks, and we will advise you during your consultation.

Does LASIK work?

According to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, over 90% of patients have 20/20 vision after the procedure, and over 96% report being satisfied with their outcomes (Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Vol. 42, Issue 8, August 2016, Pages 1224-1234).

LASIK does not stop the natural aging of the eye, but it is highly effective at correcting vision.

How long does LASIK surgery take?

The procedure takes under 10 minutes per eye, and both eyes can be done the same day. While complete healing can take up to 6 weeks, you can expect marked improvement in your vision immediately and can resume normal activities after 24 hours.

We generally do followup exams one day, two weeks, and two months post procedure. After that regular annual exams are recommended.

Is LASIK surgery painful?

We use freezing drops of Valium to help the patient relax, and the laser procedure is painless. You may experience mild discomfort in the few hours after surgery, but LASIK surgery is about as pain-free as surgery can be.
